The cash for clunkers law passed and is heading up to the White House for a signature.  The media heralds this as happy days again for the auto industry.  Is that really going to be the case?

Ah yes, part of the Wartime Spending Bill...makes perfect sense!  So I'll not address the fact that, like every other piece of legislation, this is tacked on to something else.

Happy days again for the auto industry?  I don't think so.  There are still problems with unions that make domestically headquartered car makers disadvantaged.  Also, I haven't seen any plans by the industry to use the little spike in sales that this plan will bring, to retool and focus on cars people want.  So maybe some happy days, but without hard choices...it'll be back to Uncle Sam with their hand out.
