Man, why do we not already have a documentary thread?

I've actually kind of burned out, though.  I just watch the quiet little ones like Helvetica and so on.  But let's hear some recs!

And, of course, I'm always waving the flag for Orwell Rolls in his GRave:

Quote
Orwell Rolls in His Grave is a 2004 documentary film written and directed by Robert Kane Pappas. It examines the current and past relationships between the media, the US government and corporations, analyzing the possible consequences of the concentration of media ownership. Making references to George Orwell's novel Nineteen Eighty-Four, the film argues that reality has met and in some ways exceeded Orwell's expectations about a society dominated by thought control, which is made possible by the media. According to the film, the mass media no longer report news, but manage it, deciding what makes the headlines and what is conveniently ignored, thus ultimately defining the framework upon which most other issues are discussed by the society. As an example, it is claimed that since the late 1980s there's been an agenda pursued by the major media corporations regarding the deregulation of the media market, by which news reports sell all its benefits while neglecting its disastrous results.

Yes!  Dark Days will always have a special spot in my heart because of DJ Shadow.  I actually sold a copy of the Sexy Beast soundtrack to Ian Astbury (The Cult) when he was looking for the Dark Days soundtrack.  I have probably told this story a million times, so apologies if you heard it before.

He befriended the guy who made Dark Days and suggested he use Shadow for the soundtrack.  So he came into our store looking to get a copy and I hadn't heard of the movie, but I mentioned that Sexy Beast was largely done by UNKLE, one of Shadows side projects, showed him the album and he wound up buying it instead.

Ken Burns just did a new one on the National Parks.  It's airing on the WETA in the DC area, and I'm recording it.  Caught bits and pieces of it last night and it looked pretty good.

I saw him on TV promoting this last weekend.  It does look really cool.  I'll have to check it out.  Have you seen the one he did on the Civil War?

Mardi Gras: Made in China.

http://www.netflix.com/Movie/Mardi_Gras_Made_in_China/70101781

From my torrent site:
Quote
The workers receive on average 10 cents an hour, which translates to less than 1/10th of a cent per necklace, and the factory owner makes ~1.5 million USD a year.

Now we can all judge Cass who drapes his house in blood-beads each year!

Oh, and the factory workers sleep five guys to a bed.

All the Michael Moore documentaries I've loved. Also check out War Photographer on James Nachtwey, Why We Fight, The Yes Men, and the brilliant The Times of Harvey Milk, which is a far better documentary than the movie was.
