Horror movie week
« on: October 29, 2008, 10:25:18 AM »
I always try to do a week of horror movies leading up to Halloween.  You can thank Captain 20 for that!  He introduced me to low budget horror and B movie actress titties back in the days before cable, when UHF still ruled.

Monday I half-assed watched Gargoyles again while doing tons of other stuff.  Yesterday was an hour and a half of Dead Set.  Tonight is John Carpenter's The Fog.  Tomorrow is The Blood of Heroes (not at all a Halloween movie, but long sought after and finally acquired) and, on Halloween night, it'll be Phantasm... Which I've watched every Halloween night since I was 8.  Poor, sad me.

I've hardly watched anything, I've been so busy.

Last week, Mrs. RC and I took in Hatchet, Adam Green's very enjoyable throwback to 80s slashers. Highly funny, and highly recommended. I also took in a viewing of Night of the Living Dead recently, just because it's awesome.

Tonight's a free night, so I haven't decided what I'm doing. I have Creature From the Black Lagoon coming from Netflix, (Also Elvira's Haunted Hills. Does that count as horror?) Maybe a Friday the 13th. Part 6 is somehow the perfect Halloween movie.

Friday night will be John Carpenter's Halloween of course, like I do every year.

Ooh...and Hatchet is watch instantly on Netflix.  Maybe I'll get that in me on Halloween.

Also I should mention that Dead Set is on every net, ending on Halloween, so that's a half hour additional there.  Perfect!

So the big problem with The Fog is that it opens with a ticking watch sound, which makes me want to watch Back to the Future, then it has a dangling pocketwatch effect on screen, which makes me want to watch Time After Time, and then it has the crazy sea captain telling a story, which makes me want to watch Scrooged, because the sea captain sounds just like John Houseman.

So The Fog is ruined in the first minute.  But it's still awesome!  Yay 1980!

There's a couple of great scary moments in The Fog. I love the very end as well, cheesy as it is.

Yeah, I like The Fog.  It's from the era when Carpenter was awesome.  It's just that I watch too many movies so every film I see reminds me of a dozen others.

So with Dead Set blowing me away each night, I think tonight's comedic Australian post-apocalypse B flick isn't the right thing to do.  So it'll be Wrong Turn 2, because that'll go well with lots of gin.  Then Dead Set #4.

Wow...so Wrong Turn 2 is a comedy in the same vein as Jason X.  Very enjoyable.  It's all set during the filming of a reality show in the backwoods of West Virginia.  Our group of idiot misfits are hunted down by crazed cannibal hillbillies.  It's really loads of fun.

So I woke up and watched Phantasm early this morning, because I'm a sad man.

Home early...doing chores.  Laundry, cleaning, and the sort.  My companions:  The last episode of The Restaurant, Tropic Thunder, the Indy 4 Rifftrax, and maybe Carpenter's The Thing.  Then the final episode of Dead Set.

The wine is flowing!  The washer is buzzing!

Oh right!  I'll watch that through Netflix tonight, then, instead of The Thing.

5:48.  First bottle of wine down, second opened.  A glass and dinner set out at the door for the ancestors, as are the traditional scattering of pennies.  It'll be dark shortly... Listening to Cass' latest high rotation and loving it, then on to Tropic Thunder, then Hatchet.

Fuck the kids.  I'm going to avoid that.

Three small children are going to play a large part in my life come 2009, so I'm going to enjoy as much time as a free man as I can.
