Henryton UE picture thread
« on: August 29, 2009, 11:47:38 AM »
Finally getting around to getting the pics off my camera and uploading them...

First, quoting Reggie's post that introduced me to Henryton:

So, last weekend was a bachelor party for a friend.  Part of it involved running around an abandoned mental institution with Airsoft guns.  This place is amazing:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Henryton_State_Hospital

Had to cross a river and some railroad tracks to get there.  It's enormous, and very freaky...and this was in broad daylight.  7 or 8 big buildings to explore.   At one point we were playing a game where we had two teams trying to get into a building, get a "bomb" and get out.  My friend made contact with someone who shone a flashlight in his face and then retreated into a darkened room and turned the light off.  Freaky!

I would go back there anytime...but at night it would be terrifying.

Photos (I recognized a lot of these from my visit):

Info:

This guy mentioned a bomb shelter, which I did wonder about on Saturday.  Sadly this entry is 4 years old, Iím sure there are no supplies there today.

Lotís of great stories here.  Especially from the 70+ guy who used to go to the theater to watch movies!: http://www.strangeusa.com/ViewLocation.aspx?locationid=57505&desc=%20Henryton%20Sanitarium%20%20Marriottsville%20%20MD

A couple weeks ago, we braved the stifling DC heat to crawl around the place...and it was incredible.  In the following posts, I'll throw up all the pictures I took in no particular order.

Note:  There is not a bomb shelter.  Henryton appears to have received a stockpile of freshwater from the Civil Defense, all stamped 1962 (and some of the barrels are still full).  These barrels, of course, have been scattered all over the complex.  There are a few piled up in a deep sub basement of the admin building, which could be considered bomb shelter-ish... But it's not.  The actual storage area for the water is a medium sized basement room in the far west wing (I think it's west).  Pics below will show that.

Overall, the place is stripped to the bone.  No books, no files, no paperwork, no personal belongings.  It's wide open to the public and, during our day there, we saw several groups wandering around outside and in.

The laundry room was something... Small, considering the size of the place.  But great old machines...

Holy shit, the graffiti alone is worth the trip.  Apple and cupcake often fight... hahaaa :)

Also, that place looks straight out of Fallout 3.

Bad shots of "The Glory Hole."  I declined the offer to stick my dick in it and have Reggie take a few shots.

There's a noticeable absence of satan stuff and racism... I guess graffiti artists are growing up!  But one of the "cells" was devoted to some good old fashioned race hate:

And then there's the Murder Bathroom:

Which is just off the cafeteria.  Here's Reggie the lunchlady:

And the final set:  This awesome car we found (an old Ford Thunderbird) and the Civil Defense water containers.

Yeah, it's very Fallout 3.  It's fucking begging for airsoft/paintball.  Reggie!  We need to plan trip #2.

That car was cool... I can't get over the speedometer in it.  I guess a light just came on every 10 miles an hour?  That is crazy.

If you really get off on this kind of stuff, then by all means set aside your next holiday for a trip to the Motor City. Literally hundreds upon hundreds of these derelict edifices in Detroit.

Oh yeah.  I follow lots of the UE sites for Detroit... And Cincinnati, as well.

We have a neglected UE thread right here:  http://www.greatsociety.org/forums/index.php/topic,141.0.html
